Wow Angie, thank you for agreeing to doing an interview with me, can I do it justice? You are a truly amazing Hi Nrg Diva and a very, very, popular lady.
Well I’ll give it my best shot :)
1. What was your first real lucky break to get into the Hi Nrg scene?
(A) Friendships with lots of gay men, particularly at 17yrs old with NIGEL MARTIN SMITH (ex TAKE THAT manager) who wathced me sing, type of songs, and dress style,,, completely CHANGED ME!! and took me to gay clubs, to familiarise me with THE SOUND,,, eat you up was born!!.
2. I know you come from an Italian background and that your family were very much into music, but what else can you tell us about where you came from?
(A) Really from 2yrs old, helped my mum learn her Shirley bassey songs on an old fashioned His masters voice reel to reel practice,, by 5 she had me in competitions such as PETER WEBSTER in blackpool,, followed by juniour showtime with Joe Longthorne at 8yrs old as regular presenter entertainer.
3. Music is clearly a huge part of your life and from a very young age. What other music influenced you when you were growing up?
(A) very early, (before 12) grew up with Frank Sinatra, Streisand Tony Bennet and Nat King Cole, all the GREATS of that era,, so i was taught to dramatise, and perform, to feel the song, lyrics and emotion,, even if you're not a great singer vocally, if you can put the feeling in it,, is a good thing to learn
4. What is your fondest memory of the industry in the 80's, do you have any funny
stories to tell?
(A) I think in the days when my record company took us to MIDEM in Cannes for a fair for the music industry and publishers etc, i went with Tony Denton and Nicky Price,,, was such a laugh, we drank all night, and thought we could swim in the med at 7am,, in January,,, was freezing, we almost got thrown out of the poshest hotel in Cannes all went for breakfast in soaking wet clothes!!
5. Ever since I started up Skerat’s, I have been continually amazed at how lucky I have been, to talk to some incredibly friendly artists. Of course, I’m happy to say you are right up there Angie. Another one of those artists is Alan Cook, who I believe is a very good friend of yours, who else from the 80’s do you keep in touch with?
(A)Barca is not far from where i live, so i get together with Alan for a few vino tintos
whenever there!! i stay in touch with Norma Lewis, we like to sit over a few wines and catch up, shes inspirational and never changes,, another Scorpio like me, Also Angie Brown, and Miguel Brown,, 2 greats, yet we chill together easily!!
6. Your real name is Angelina Fiorina Kyte, how did your stage name Angie Gold come about?
(A) One agent said my Italian name made me sound like a "stripper", so the time of
"Grease" he dressed me in Gold spandex trousers and the waistcoat, and bow tie
like Olivia NJ, but all in gold,, and so i stuck with that name! (After note from Skerat 'stripper' that agent had rocks in his head, it's a beautiful name)
7. You have had a number of hits as Angie Gold and with People Like Us, Eat You Up, Applause, Haunted House, Resurrection, etc, which hits were special and why?
(A) Always Eat you up will remain special,, the attention it received, and still today, people are asking to do remixes,, is beyond me how it became so special, but im truly grateful for the lifechanging experience it allowed me to have,,Also Dont Cry for me
Argentina,,, I remember flying to Los Angeles one Dec 30, to perform for 6,000 people, its was no 1 in dance billboard, and next day in San Diego,,, even
today, its the one i want to invest for make a great "dark" mysterious video of,,
just the life story of Eva Peron,, I was in Buenos Aires last new year, and
visited her grave in Recoletta,, a great "peoples woman"
8. What was your most favorite Italo\Hi Nrg track not released by yourself and
(A) Truth,,there are many but a favourite has to be I BELIEVE IN DREAMS jackie Rawe,, cos i do!! and i could do it great,,with passion,,,
9. You have released a new album this year Nrg Diva and it’s fantastic, did you have a
lot of fun putting it together?
(A) I chose all the songs, and got to work with producers I wanted,so totally made it
myself, together with Fabio Diez my manager from Argentina, he speaks spanish.
So we were able to involve people from south america too, that wouldn't normally
be involved in a project like that, and i got to fly to New York, twice to
record with a remixer of Madonna and Village people,, went shopping and eating
in famous restaurants i'd only read about in magazines!! yipee, recording all the
vocals mainly at my home in Tenerife with Fabio was great too, rehearsing here,
and finally accceptng a "take" (Fabio was quite critical as hes a perfectionist)
up until 3yrs ago he knew nothing of me!!!! So yes, had the best fun ever,
watching it all grow!!!.
10. As I’m Australian can I ask? Have you ever had the opportunity to travel to Australia? Are there other places you would like to visit?
(A) Way back in 1982 I had a song with CBS called GET IT OVER WITH my first ever
release,, was at No 9 in the Australian charts, and I was in Tokyo, Japan to do
the music festival at Buddokhan hall in front of 15,000 people. I was on a tour
of Japan, with the same song, signed to Epic/sony for 6 weeks, we were supposed
to go on to Australia afterwards, but it didnt transpire. I would LOVE to sing
in Australia,, who wouldnt!!!!!!!!
(We would love to see you here Angie, a Will Reid Club 80s concert perhaps)
11. You have a lot of things happening at the moment, concerts like Gaypride, work
supporting Aids and Feed Africa, and your boot camp. Do you have any time to
(A) Help Feed Africa,, im going to need a "voice" people will listen to, and understand,
some strength and conviction, and money,, I will do it, because, our brothers
and sisters there are starving,, There is enough provided all over the world for
peoples and everyones needs, but not enough for mans greed,,is mans greed keeps
these people starving, theres nothing more traumatic, than seeing pictures of a
hungry mother in Africa, her child is starving, yet shes no milk in her breast
for her child,,,shes so sick herself and malnutrition,,, I love to be busy, and
my mind doesnt really stop much, is always active,, i get tired, but only sleep
4 or 5 hours a night,, When I relax, is with friends, over a lunch or dinner,
with good wine, and laughter, and you cant beat being in LOVE for good
relaxation!!! i Love to travel, and explore and shop,, but TK max, a second hand
shop and hunt a good bargain,,, I love laughter though more than anything,,,
pretty simple really,,,But, when working, pretty demanding, and no prisoners
Thankyou Andrew,, your questions were great and interesting for me to
answer,, loved it,, a pleasure!!!!!! xxxxxxx
