Alan Cook
Hi Alan,
Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed for my Facebook group. You are not only a legend for your music, but also for your generosity as well. Now let’s get straight into the questions.:- 1. What was your first real lucky break to get into the Spanish dance music scene? (A) I was in the soul and jazz Barcelona scene and some sharp producers thought I’d be the perfect mix between good looks and talent as singer and composer. Those producers started hiring me to sing their demos and to write their lyrics, sometimes also as a composer, and after that it all lead me to sing my ownproductions for the company I was working the most back in 1985, Max Music. 2. You had some great hits in the 80’s, you recently released Don’t Give Up. It’s a great track, do you plan to do anymore tracks soon? (A) Yes, I am in the process of releasing a new 12” in europe and america soon, with a hell of a Swedish producer. I’ll have u duly informed… 3. What is your fondest memory of the industry in the 80’s? (A) The many real musical talents that were not yet shadowed by Dj’s. We were live real singers and musicians, in an age pretty full of new composing tools. It was great fun. I remember having a jam session with some of the components of “TheCure” after a TV gig in France. Awesome… 4. Manfred Segieth told me you guys keep in touch in his interview with me. Do you keep in touch with any of the other artists from the era and if so which ones? (A) Sure, we do keep in touch. I have a lovely friendship with Ryan Paris, Den Harrow, Silver Pozzoli, Ivan, and many others. 5. I read somewhere that you chose the stage name Alan Cook, partly as homage to Captain Cook the explorer. You would probably be aware that captain Cook discovered Australia, have you ever had the opportunity to travel to Australia? (A) I was aware of that detail, of course. I never had the opportunity to travel to Australia, though I’ve been rather close. I had a good time touring in Thailand, Korea, Taiwan and Japan back in the 80’s. I hope there will be achance one of these days to visit you aussies. 6. I know from my Facebook group you like a lot of tracks. What was your favorite Italo\Hi Nrg track and why? (A) My favorite Italo track is Around my dream by Silver Pozzoli, because he’s a real great singer, and the talent of his voice with the essence of italo made a huge and deserved hit. Talking about High energy, I can´t forget Evelyn Thomas, because her powerful voice and subtle arrangements. 7. As one of the early pioneers of dance music, what do you think of the dance music scene today? (A) I think technology is allowing many untalented people to get into the industry. It seems fashion and looks, as well as marketing is much more important than quality. At the end, what matters is a track that makes your emotions flow at first sight. Not after bombing you with thousands of marketing impacts through tv, radio and internet. Tunes, talented musicians and better performers are what I love. Nowadays, I believe new artists are more worried to be famous than to grow as artists. Of course not all of them, there’s still a lot of talent to get discovered. That’s why 80’s music is back, or refurnished 80’s hits allover again…., 8. OK my last question, can you say a big hello to the group and pass on any words of wisdom? (A) Well, a huge hello to all the friends and lovers of Italo and High Energy in Australia, and my honest wish to go on with releasing new tracks and supportingthe scene. Hope I can travel soon there. Best regards for all! Alan |
